Plot hole that wrecked it for me (spoiler)

Near the end of the movie when they learn Andromeda uses everything for fuel, even the energy from an atomic blast, why didn't they realize Andromeda would use light as fuel? All that sunlight and artificial light should have had Andromeda growing and mutating like mad from the get go.

Andromeda was growing with ionizing radiation. Visible light is not ionizing.

The output from an atomic blast isn't just radiation though. The heat (hotter than the surface of the sun) would have destroyed it.
Stone said Andromeda uses everything, wastes nothing.
But also, the samples that broke through the seals and exposed Dutton hadn't been exposed to ionizing radiation but still mutated just like the samples in the electron microscope.

If ALL of the Andromeda was within the destructive blast radius, then it should all be destroyed by heat. But if it escaped from the lab and spread far enough to not be destroyed by heat, what was left would grow VERY fast. Since the atomic bomb was at the very bottom of the underground space, it might be that it wouldn't have to spread very far above ground - especially "sideways" - to be beyond the total-destruction distance of the bomb.

What bugged me more was when it mutated into something harmless they went home. If it mutated once it will almost certainly do it again, maybe info something even worse.

The Wildfire team probably went back to their every day lives, sure. But we are told they have Andromeda at Wildfire and continue to study it. Plus they said so far, it hadn't mutated into a lethal form again. But you are right, it may do just that some day. That's why the movie ends with a question.

It was growing, they showed it growing. But the energy from light, natural or artificial, was only enough to make it grow very, very slowly. Not "like mad."
