Man-made and not extraterrestrial?

I mean, what are the odds an alien virus is lethal precisely for people with ordinary blood values and harmless for anything even slightly off standard? Especially while appearing to be almost indestructible and immortal?

Yep, that's always been the biggest problem with a movie which otherwise is one of the few truly hard scifi movies ever made. You'll find that criticism in most reviews. I thought it would have been better if it was engineered rather than the extraterrestrial origins but spaceflight was a big thing at the time so it probably made it more marketable.

What if it didn't come about NATURALLY extraterrestrially, but was developed by extraterrestrials as a tool for "terraforming" other worlds to suit them?
