Well, he got hit twice with a police revolver and maybe got hit by the police Thompson machine gun when they shot the elevator doors. When the cops and ambulance guys take Connery out of the apartment his face is covered by the blanket so you would think he was dead. And the way he gets thrown around being propped up in the elevator wouldn't do a recently shot guy any good. But on the other hand they do rush him into the ambulance which you wouldn't really need to do if he had already croaked. My money would be that he does die - at least two bullets in the back and all that exertion crawling up the chimney means if he wasn't already dead he never reached he hospital.

I'm surprised more of the crew didn't get hit and killed when the cops opened fire with that Thompson.
