Why is this film considered to be Christopher Walkens "debut"?

I noticed in the opening credits it says "Introducing Christopher Walken" even though he had acted in a movie called "Cleopatra" the year before and appeared in numerous TV movie & series dating back to 1953. Why is that?

The 1970 Cleopatra film was a very low budget indie. THis was his first significant role in a major film.

Audrey Hepburn got an "introducing" credit in Roman Holiday, even though she had small roles in several British films earlier including The Lavender Hill Mob.

I think they wanted to use this film as launchpad of a potential new talent although he was performing for a decade before this film.

It's that man again!!
