Comparisons with Se7en?

I think the comparisons with the movie Se7en are unfair. Sure, both have a killer that kills creatively, but other than that, they are completely different. You never find out why he is using the plagues of egypt, and the punishment doesn't fit the crime as it did so well in Se7en. Heh, and in no way was Se7en campy...I laugh when I think of the part with the locusts and the nurse...haha

I too, immediately thought of Phibes when I saw Seven.

I think the comparisons are fair and accurate. Phibe's choice of the G'Tach as his means of revenge are in character, since one of his doctorates is in theology.

Seven used the non-scriptural 7 Deadly Sins, and employed them more accurately, but Phibes motivation was clearer and more palatable.

There can be no doubt that "Se7en" lifts its plot wholesale from "The Abominable Dr. Phibes". Down to the detail of the killer staging his own death as the very last instalment on the list. And the police just standing by, as helpless witnesses. The films are of course also different, but not much so in plot and structure.

There is perhaps some literary forebears of this particular plot? Any ideas? Agatha Christie?

Yeah and the movie "Saw" was a complete rip-off from the movie "Se7en". Hollywood has no original ideas anymore.
