From the Goofs section

Anachronisms: This movie is taking place in the year 1928 yet at the end Dr. Phibes plays "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" which was not written until ten years later.

Okay...

The automobiles, the airplane, and film projector (showing the sexy movie) all seem to be models from the 1920s, but the house interiors (including the lights around Dr. Phibes' organ) and clothing appear modern contemporary when the film was made - early 1970s "mod" style.

Utter rubbish!

reply

Well, no. Actually, it's a weird combination of Art Deco and faux exotica...

reply

Well they are certainly not 1970s!

reply

Dr. Phibes did not play "Over the Rainbow" at the end of the movie. And as you can hear, it contained no organ music.

This was merely the background score selected for the closing credits meant for the contemporary audience only. The amusing relevance (Phibes now moves on to a higher level = "over the rainbow").

Doesn't the song appear in the sequel?

reply

I'm not sure if the song is featured in the sequel or not. I actually bought the twin CD pack, but haven't gotten around to viewing either disc yet.

It might actually have been in the original film upon it's initial release...I think due to rights issues the music on that film was changed when it debuted on VHS and then DVD.

reply

Yes, in fact, the original cut featured vocals by Price!

The sequal had Price singing 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' at the end.

It's better to rest in the warm body of a friend, than in a cold hole in the ground.

I was aware of many anachronisms while watching the film but it did not spoil my viewing pleasure at all. It just added to the film's surrealism. It's not meant to be taken seriously.

reply

Well yes, my original p[oint was that the costumes aren't rom the 70s like it syas in the goofs section. They are period costumes in the 20/30s style.
