Does Jo Cotten and the cops get killed?

Now I realize it's the final death: Darkness. But at the same time, they're around to see the darkness.

I guess it means they get stuck in there forever and die that way (they could turn Peter Jeffrey's nose into an eternal club sandwich and survive quite a while)...

But since one of the curses doesn't work i.e. the boy lives, I was wondering if maybe the last one would also fail...

Phibes reserved the final curse of Darkness for himself. That's the purpose of the crypt sealing up. The detectives definitely didn't die, as two of them (Peter Jeffreys and his superior) returned in the sequel.
