Inheritance question

Given "glug glug glug," as Simon Williams says in a DVD commentary - my stomach was sore, he made me laugh so hard with his quips! - wouldn't James have inherited Southwold and the earldom? I haven't watched past S3/Ep2 in years, so I may have forgotten some obstacle to this.

Hmmm. Good question. I don't remember who was alive and who wasn't! I don't think so, though.

Marjorie's brother was the new Earl of Southwold, and he died with her on Titanic. If he had any sons, they would inherit the title; not James. Since James didn't inherit it, I guess we can assume that he had cousins who did.

Whores will have their trinkets.

Roberts refers to the "young" Lady Southwold being on the Titanic, though not her fate. I had the impression that she and Hugo hadn't been married long - and that Hugo was Lady Marjorie's only sibling. Of course, they cast a wide net on DA to find an heir in Matthew, but James seems the likely candidate here. I'll keep watching!

(Update - on my knowledge, that is.) There's been a reference to James' cousin/s, and Lady Marjorie's having been the "eldest" daughter of an earl, so I believe you're right. J must have an older male cousin. Also, LM's mother has (S3/Ep9) been referred to as the Dowager Countess; I believe this means there's a new earl (*and* countess?) but I'm not sure?

OT, but I thought it strange when Elizabeth was not in London for her grandfather's funeral. Now, Lady S has come for Christmas - widowed, and having recently and tragically lost two children - bringing with her Georgina, whose father is dead and whose (not so young after all) mother, and stepfather Hugo, (of whom she tells Daisy she was very fond,) are gone as well - and James and Hazel are off spending the holiday in Paris?! Real supportive, tight-knit family!

Titles of nobility almost always descend in the male line. I imagine one reason for this is to keep the family surname intact. (For example, in Downton Abbey Matthew inherits even though he is a distant relative to Robert. But his last name is the same--Crawley.)

So James would never inherit the title. He is a Bellamy, not a Talbot-Carey (the Southwold surname). In the episode "Word of Honour" Richard mentions Southwold is now occupied by a cousin of Marjorie. (Mentioned so fast it is easy to miss.)

Quite right ntctc7. I heard Richard say that the title has gone to one of the Talbot-Carey cousins.

I was thinking of the DA situation, with Lady Mary's son being the future earl - but completely overlooking the fact that it's only because he's *Matthew's* son. : /
