Props from the Show

Hi,

I was 6 years old when this show went on TV and have fond memories of sitting around with the family on Sunday nights and watching it. I have been to the actual house at 1134 Greenwich St in San Fran and it still looks much like it did when it was used for the exterior shots of the Mac and Sally house in the first few seasons. I actually talked to their next door neighboor who has lived there since 1970. He said he frequently saw Rock and Susan when they used to shoot the exteriors and that they were nice and friendly people. They used the bathroom in his house!

Does anyone know what happened to all of the props- clothes, furniture etc when the show was cancelled? Do the studios just throw this stuff out, auction it or keep it in storage?

Plenty of items go into storage. For instance, the griffin/gargoyle figures which adorned the giant newel posts of "The Munsters" staircase from 1964 - 66 turned up as background dressing in a scene from 1992's "Death Becomes Her".

There's no one answer to what happens to stuff from shows. Many items are rented from prop houses who kept warehouses full of stuff. A few years ago one of the larger ones shut down and had a big auction, one of the items was the rattan furniture from "The Golden Girls".
Studios had their own prop departments but got rid of stuff when they downsized in the 70's. Look for the stories about Dorothy's Ruby Slippers and you'll find a guy who talked his way into a job at MGM and supposedly heled himself to several pairs as well as many other items.
Debbie Reynolds has a huge collection of costumes but sadly has never been able to raise the money to display them all for the public.
Some stars also keep souvenirs, one of the Seinfeld cast has the intercom from Jerry's apartment.
