What this a big deal at the time it was filmed?

That may not have been so unusual back then because Florida and James on 'Good Times' there was also a 20 year age difference. John Amos was 20 years younger than Esther Rolle even though they played husband and wife. I actually thought they were the same age. I think a lot of it had to do with John Amos having a receding hairline and they sprayed gray flecks in his hair to make him appear older.

No. People didn't freak out about age differences the way they do today, when everyone is strictly divided up into their bizarre generational "Boomer", "X", "Millennial", "Z", etc. tribes.

My wife is 16 years older and no one has ever said a word about it. In fact, they always think she's years younger than her real age. We just passed our 43rd anniversary. :-)
