I recall watching a series about British aristocats where two cousins were married , but the wife was really cold, and kicked her husband out of her bedroom. She later had an affair with another guy who ended up getting killed by a carriage, when he went to confront his lover's husband for raping her. The second part took place in the 1920's. The program aired in 2004.

I think this was The Forsyte Saga remake.

JillyConCarne is absolutely right, it was The Forsyte Saga (2002). But it was a 10-part mini-series. I suspect you missed a few episodes, and if you did, do check them out of your library. All the episodes are worthwhile, and there is a wonderful resolution at the end.
