Sad

This movie was, it boiled down to basically a clash of wills/culture. McGavin’s character who was a bastard at times in the movie, one can understand his desperation and how he really felt, especially since this was filmed at the height of the Vietnam war. He had to get these boys ready for that.

Loved Jan’s speech about him coming from a different “Tribe(s)”. Hey, in most of my life I’ve always felt the same way as if whatever tribe I did belong to, no longer existed and I was the only one. Guess as humans we all feel that way from time to time. It has nothing to do with color or race, or culture, heritage but I guess your “tribe” would be of people who were cut from the same cloth as you no matter who they happened to be.

McGavin’s speech to Jan towards the end was one of my favorite parts of this. “Son, I’ve killed people just so we can sit down and have the conversation we’re having now”. Not verbatim as I don’t remember exactly what he said to the letter but that’s the gist of it.

There are handful of movies that I’ve gone to the theaters to see Jan Michael-Vincent in.
“The Mechanic”, “Hooper”, “Defiance”, “Xtro-2”. This which was called “Tribes” at the time I saw in the 4:30 movie on channel 7 (ABC) in NY when they ran the 4:30 movie in the 70’s.

Always loved him, even as a kid, something about him just spoke to me as a man who had a loving side, which was not fake. Sad to see what became of him.

Here’s hoping whoever you are reading this, may you find your tribe in this world. Peace.
