It is never explained?

How this Soctiey became this way?

reply

I think it's assumed that humans were driven underground due to some sort of disaster i.e. nuclear war, biological disaster etc. and that a totalitarian government assumed control at some point.

SRT: How shall the new environment be programmed? It all happened so slowly that most men failed to realize that anything had happened at all.

I've always got the impression that due to an environmental disaster of some sort that society was driven undergorund but I've never thought that there actually was a totalitarian regime behind it.

Rather, that in the efforts to ensure the survival of society underground without going mad, the gradual increase in the use of sedation had become so normal as well as the fanatical pursuit of efficiency, meant that society had simply forgot the prupose of staying underground and that they or, at least most of the people, had become dependant on the lifestyle.

There is no malignant force or power behind the scenes which is gaining from the way things are in the movie.

Yeah, basically a clumsy bureaucracy. Like in the movie Brazil.

The society presented in the film was how many people in 1971 viewed their own, present society. Many people today would argue that we are well on our way. If one were to look around, one might rightly observe that, for increased enjoyment and efficiency, consumption is definitely being standardized.
