My Favorite Rankin/Bass Christmas Special
RUDOLPH gets all the propz for being first and A YEAR WITHOUT A SANTA CLAUS gets all the hype for having the Heatmizer, but SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN will always be my favorite of all the Rankin/Bass Christmas specials. The dark tone of the first half (I still remember being scared senseless by the Warlock, his bad acid Tree Monsters and the Burgermeister) and really impressed by the animation. I also think that "First Toymakers to the King", "One Foot In Front of the Other" and the song that Fred Astair sings are the best of all the songs from the whole series -- probably mostly because NONE are regarded as "classic holiday standards" that you are likely to hear in line waiting at the post office or some other horrifying public space's PA system. I also like the idea of Santa as a rebel bringing down some totalitarian state with his good natured cluelessness. He also does in an entire platoon of those Weimar Republic Waffentroops with his 133t winter skillz.
