During "My world is beginning today" they start doing some funky stuff with colors that just seemed out of place to me. Almost as if they're saying, "Hey, if you're tripping on acid here's a scene for you."

Well consider the era it was produced in. People who talk about the 'good old days' don't neccessarily remember that double meanings were just more creatively worked in due to a comparative lack of technology.
