Slightly Underrated

Am I the only one who thinks this special deserves to be Rankin/Bass's 2nd most famous instead of Frosty the Snowman? I like both specials, but I think this one comes closer to the quality of Rudolph than Frosty does.

I think this one surpasses Rudolph, to be honest. It's the best of the Rankin Bass specials.

Don't look into the Death Star, or you will die.

Well, you have to look at all of them as slipping in subliminal messages about politics to really appreciate what the people who made these specials got away with.

I rewatched Frosty a couple of days ago, and thought it was the worst. I grew up with this special and yes--noticed things that I hadn't as a kid.

The kids are kept in school so close to Christmas--and at least their parents aren't protesting the lack of a break. What kind of school/city is this? Isn't anybody interested in doing something fun. Did the burgermeister move on to this town?

Karen's mom doesn't notice she's disappeared. Okay it was first aired before the missing kids movement raised organized public awareness, but still.

It's sweet that Frosty cares about trying to keep Karen warm--even at risk to himself, but an idea that she could freeze to death doesn't provide me with warm Christmas memories.

And then before Santa saves the day is heartbreaking. I guess the point of this story is that friends might have to move away, but should still stay in touch with each other. It did make me sad.

RUDOLPH gets all the nostalgia attention because it was first and the one with the Heatmizer gets all the propz because he rulez, but SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN is the best of the Rankin/Bass holiday specials. It is a uniquely twisted little concoction with the best music from all the specials.
