They still had the steel bars to get through. Flying reindeer don't get them out of jail.

Judging from how they showed them flying out, there was apparently an open area within the walls. Even prisoners get outdoor time.

Even the Winter Warlock said that magic feed corn doesn't melt steel bars. They made an error in the story.

The show never said they were held in solitary lockup 24 hours a day. The reindeer landed during recreation in the open courtyard. They were in a jail in a small town in Germany, not Sing-Sing or Huntsville.

I think the children's book mentions that the Sombertown Dungeon was built like a fortress with an open courtyard (I'm not exactly sure, though). I can only assume that the guards had let them out for exercise and that the reindeer came in and rescued them there.
