Why not "Silverado" - very much in the style and with a younger generation of (then) up and coming stars.
I have it on DVD and I actually bought the sound track!
It kicks some ass still after all the years!!! Especially the ending...I bought it just for the last song! But it really pumps you up! I've liked this movie since I was A lil Duke fan! And always will!!! Give em Hell!!!
You know you're a parent when your child's diaperbag doubles as your purse.
I love this movie too. Mostly because it brings back memories of when I saw it, but also because I just love John Wayne and Jack Elam.
shareIt was a good movie. It wasn't one of John Wayne's best in my opinion but still it was good. Jack Elam stole the show and he was hilarious and great in it. It was a good thing that they had him in this movie.
shareJack Elam was a great character actor and will be missed. He stole scenes in a lot of movies. Check out the opening scene in "Once upon a time in the West"also.
shareThis is one of my favorite JW films. I consider it the third in a great trilogy that includes Rio Bravo and El Dorado. I quote Jack Elam's lines from this movie all the time. He was great! The women in this one aren't hard to look at either.

Good movie, one of my favorite John Wayne movie
that is all
I've loved this movie--and been a John Wayne fan--ever since I saw it from the back of my folks' station wagon at the drive-in (while wearing footie pajamas, no less).
also dig the Maltin book's description of Elam's character...
'shotgun-toting old looney'
vaya con dios...
'We all dream of being a child again - even the worst of us. Perhaps the worst most of all...'
It's a good entertaining western. I always liked this movie, not the best western ever but still enjoyable.
The Guitar Music at the beginning is really great. One of my favourite themes.
Yeah, I agree. This and those other two movies you mentioned are similar in some ways, and all three are certainly worthy of being known as a great trilogy. I really cannot understand why it gets bad reviews by others, but oh well, F'em.
And, yes, the women in this movie are certainly unusual in that they are so gorgeous and seem cool as well.
two westerns i came across airing on the same morning with jack elam and just when i thought he was always typecasted this came on, still playing a loony though, what a presence that actor has on the screen, in the same scene even john wayne mellowed out, i guess they had to be careful how to cast him, doesn't seem like he was the sort of actor they could just throw in any role, i used to think they maked up elam alot in "twilight zone: will the real martian please stand up?" to look way older, i can't believe he was still around so long after these old productions. notice the scene where the guy caught on fire it was pretty obvious those were fake legs after you've learned about behind the scenes documentaries how all that stuff works.
rather you had stayed gone,
than returning treating me so low,
i'd rather remember your once sweet wave at the station,
i was better off not receiving this humiliation,
never could live up to your norm,
don't know what it is i do wrong,
all i know now is i'd rather stay gone.
