What happened with Sheriff Hendricks' rifle?

I own firearms and thought I knew them pretty well but I never saw anything like what happened when the Sheriff tried to fire his rifle there at the end, it looked like the barrel just blew open, did it misfire, blow up or what? It looked like he was injured as well.

Haven't seen this movie in a while but didn't the Sheriff use the rifle as a cane and fill up the barrel with dirt or mud as he walked?
Perhaps that caused the "blew open" as you described.

yeah, that is the explanation out there, but that seems odd. I don't see how he could have clogged the barrel of the rifle to the point where it caused it to explode just by using it as a crutch on the ground.

One of us should try it some day. I'll let you know.

Check out the scene again, especially just before the rifle blew up. The director made sure to show us how the barrel of the rifle was jammed into the dirt several times.

Now, if in real life that probably wouldn't have caused the rifle barrel to explode. However, the director must have thought it was a good cinematic ploy.
