Ah, I can see I should have waited until I watched the whole movie before posting. The actual offence is clearly greater by orders of magnitude.

Back at this site after a long time. Certainly, the underlining question in this film seems to be: "is he or isn't he gay ?". The film left me with the feeling that he is not, just more of a very ecccentric dandy of a bachelor, which men could be more comfortably in those days; but even a confirmed misogynist could fall prey to a woman's charms. At least that was my impression anyway. The film is definitely a strange mix of emotions, a lot of intended humor falls flat on it's face. but good cast and performances.

So, what if Holmes may be gay? Who cares?
sharebasil rathbone, he ain't
shareHow can any adult with two neurons to rub together read the Holmes stories, and NOT wonder if Holmes played for the home team?
But to be fair to this movie, there's infinitely more to it than the raising of that particular question. It's one of the better Holmes films ever made, with some intriguing mystery elements, a wonderfully luscious score, good performances, a few extremely funny moments, and some depth to its Holmes. I recommend it.
How can any adult with two neurons to rub together read the Holmes stories and make the moronic mistake of suspecting Holmes of being gay? Any reader with a normally functioning brain realizes that just because Holmes or Henry Higgins or whoever it may be has a male friend, even one who sleeps over, doesn't mean he is homo. Reality is more complicated than that.
sharePeople with multiple neurons don't wonder if Holmes might be gay because he has a close male friend, they wonder because he never expressed any sexual or romantic interest in anyone (except for admiring Irene Adler's brains), and that's very unusual for an adult human being. There could be a lot of reasons for that - he could be on the autism spectrum or otherwise aneurotypical, he could have psychological issues or just be naturally asexual, he could be gay in an era when it was criminalized, etc. Holmes just isn't like other people, and people have been speculating about his psychology for well over 100 years now, and yes - being gaaaaaaay is most definitely a possible explanation for some of his eccentricities.
The movie is great, BTW, I recommend it to anyone with more neurons than you.
I've always found the question of Holmes' sexuality in this film to be quite ambiguous and not as clear cut as some people claim. The "you're being presumptuous" moment, as well as his tenderness for Watson suggest repressed same-sex desire-- however, there's also the sad story of Holmes' fiancee, who died hours before their wedding. Holmes' recounting of the event suggests he's shut himself off from other people (women and men both, perhaps) because of this loss. His saddened reaction to Gabrielle's death at the end also suggests possible romantic feelings, though in that case I'm more inclined to think he respected her as a worthy intellectual adversary. Her naked body does not tempt him when she "sleepwalks," but he seems much more interested in her once it becomes clear how clever she is.
The original cut of the film also included a flashback to Holmes' college years in which he loves a woman from afar and idealizes her as an icon of purity, only to discover she's a prostitute. Like the fiancee story, this serves to emphasize Holmes' feelings toward romantic involvement-- namely, that it isn't worth the risk because (in his experience) women "are not reliable."
So yeah, under the clever mystery and luscious score, the romanticism and weirdness, hilarious ballet scenes and clever dialogue, the movie ultimately depicts Holmes as a tragically repressed heterosexual.
Which was very much the thinking of the times it was made, in those days sexual inhibition and repression were thought of as the worst thing that ever happened to anyone, or any heterosexual anyway. And the mass media at least assumed that the whole world was heterosexual.
