Japanese widescreen VHS edition: a cool tip for y'all
I just posted this on one of the dozen or so DVD threads, but I thought I'd give it it's own header, so people notice. Those of you who are drooling for a nice version of the film -- tho' I can only compare it to the terrible North American VHS editions -- are advised to GO JAPANESE, and pick up their VHS edition of this film, if you can find it via mailorder. It is FAR, FAR superior to anything else I've seen. It's in a widescreen format with wonderful colours and sound, and has a runtime of 105 minutes -- tho' of course it comes with Japanese subtitles (but you got used to that with EL TOPO, right?). Doublecheck with someone who can read Japanese -- I can barely remember my hiragana and katakana -- but this turns up on Amazon when I enter the code on my video box, WV-W11131, and the title, I can vouch for, is PERFORMANCE, and the subsequent characters in the title match up with what's on the box:

They DO ship internationally, tho' not everything is available that they list! Oh, and note that they also have a widescreen VHS edition of ZABRISKIE POINT that's pretty nice (tho' it has the wrong music at the end, that crappy Roy Orbison song) and an extended version of DEATH WATCH, with Harvey Keitel, Harry Dean Stanton, and Max von Sydow -- one of the great forgotten films of the 1980s, and the European/Japanese versions are far better than (and radically different from) the North American...
You are welcome to send me money or other forms of graft as a means of thanking me for these invaluable tips.
