I've just had a quick look at Google's Street View of Palace Gate. Now that it has all been "gentrified," what a difference there is to be seen as compared with the seedy, rubbish strewn, location shown in the early shots as Chas. walks the pavements to his hide-away.
It's a lot different today. I was last there in 2006 and it was all rather posh. I went to Powys Square and although you can still spot the house used for the exteriors the area is very upmarket. A few years back the pundits were claiming that Brixton will become gentrified but I haven't seen that yet.
...now I do it just to watch their f----n' expression change.
As chance will have it, just a few hours after the previous post appeared, came the announcement on Radio 4 that a Blue Plaque is to be put up in Notting Hill to the Scottish Chemist who discovered several Noble Gasses about a century earlier.
Actually Brixton has been becoming increasingly gentrified for the past couple of decades. There's still a much higher proportion of council estates there though so it's not going to become the Notting Hill of the South for quite a while yet.
I used to love Notting Hill in the 70's, one of my favourite places in the space-time continuum. It's pretty much lost its soul now though.
I used to want to change the world. Now I just want to leave the room with a little dignity.
