Chas sleeping with Lucy or was he?

Maybe, it's just me, but the scene when Chas is in bed with Lucy, well, it looks like he's in bed with Turner, until after a few seconds, the brunette reveals herself to be Lucy.

I swear in watching this scene, before, we see Lucy's face, it looks as though Chas is in bed with Turner. Only until they're finished embracing and Lucy turns to camera do we know it's her.

Any thoughts on this?

there are many, or at least a few moments like this throughout the film and it plays on the themes of identity and what unites Chas and Turner - the Vise and Versa, the North and South of the river, the old and the new etc.

i noticed this too. I think it was jagger for the first shot when fox taps him and he turns around and as soon as the camera cuts they replace jagger with the girl (who has frekley arms).
it totally fooled me the first time i saw it but....hahahaha

I wondered the same thing. Even that woman's breasts (small nipples/Areole) could pass for a man when laying on her back. I watched on a 22" screen from afar and often had trouble telling if she was a he or a she, but definitely though Jagger was laying with Chaz too. Fits the theme of the movie in hindsight.

And when Chas gets taken away in the end, check carefully to see the Mick Jagger moment.

We've been studying this film in my AS Film Studies class, it's one of the ones on the syllabus for the exam, and we've noticed this too. There seems to be a theme of gender merging going on the film, and this scene shows that. I think it ties into some of the issues of the era.

Your love is such a tease

I think it may be because there is a hint of sexual attraction between Chas and Turner and plus he's tripping.

reply

I had to actually pause the movie and it is Mick Jagger in the shot where they're kissing, but then it it switches to Lucy. I got the sense that Chas actually thought he was with Turner at first.

Chas rustles a form on the bed. When the figure rouses and turns around, we see it's Turner (Mick Jagger). Then it cuts to a different angle, from behind the figure, who is wearing the same robe and has similar hair. At that point, the figure gets on top of Chas and they start making out and you are definitely led to believe that it's still Turner. However, on close inspection, you can see it's actually Lucy. So, the two men never actually kiss.

They did a bait-and-switch. If you watch it again, you'll see that in the first part of the scene, it's Turner.

They also do this at the end between Turner 7 Chas.

reply

Yes. Remember, it is about 'merging' so everyone seems to be merging with everyone else. It also hints at Chas' homosexuality.

This is on the AS syllabus? Kind of ruined it for me now

The AS syllabus? I'm not sure what you are referring to.

reply

Oh sorry, I wasn't referring to your post, it was an earlier one where someone said the film was on an AS syllabus, which is an exam for 16/17 year olds in the UK and Ireland.

Now you've explained it, I still don't understand why that would be funny.

I was so excited to see them in bed together! I wish there'd been a love scene between the two men. When Mick was sitting in the chair watching James sleep... ooh, you know he wanted it!

I agree with you. Cammell and Roeg handled that potentially great scene poorly. Possibly they were too chickensh*t to go all the way, or James Fox had a hissy fit about kissing Jagger on film. When I watched the film in college years ago, some jerk behind me uttered "Thank God" when Turner turns out to be Lucy. Cammell and Roeg gave solace to this moron. Unforgivable!
