Still impressive
Went back to this film to get Patton's quote at the end, which I might use as part of my retirement speech in a couple of months, and ended up watching the whole film again, first time in maybe 10 years. Still very impressive, with perfect casting even down to the smallest of parts, and great attention to detail in every single scene. George C. Scott's "larger than life" performance is still incredible, and Karl Malden matches him scene for scene as well. A tribute to Army life and careers, WWII veterans, and a "take it or leave it" film for everyone else. Left me wondering if things were really any better back then. All that fighting in North Africa, Sicily, France...sounds pretty crazy today...and maybe it was crazy. And now 70+ years later the European races are slowly being infiltrated by Arab races, what a waste those wars were. A lesson for the rest of us now: get along with your own race, or be divided and conquered by others...might have more.

P.S. Too bad that Scott and the director could not recreate the magic of this film with "Islands in the Stream" seven years later. That film fell very flat in comparison. A better title would have been "Derelicts out of the Mainstream" !
