American Sniper because it's also a character study of a hawkish, uncompromisingly nationalist man that, even if a slightly more partial picture than Patton, I believe can still also be appreciated by both sides of the political spectrum.

I would suggest the movie MacArthur from 1977.
Not that bad a movie despite its only 6.6 rating here on IMDb.

Agree. Not the masterpiece Patton is, but a decent movie.

The only problems with MacArthur are that, as a biopic about a World War II US Army general officer and having been produced in the same decade by the same producer (Frank McCarthy), it was inevitable that it would be compared to Patton. And that it tried to cram ten years of the subject's life (1942-1952, not counting the framing device of the 1962 West Point address) into two hours while Patton covered two and a half years of its subject's life in three hours.

The budget was also a little lacking, so there weren't as many large-scale battle scenes as there should have been.

The Japanese planes dropping bombs at the beginning of the movie weren't even shown carrying bombs.

I really liked "Midway". It isn't single-character-centric like Patton, but it is from that same era of movie making that feels like soul food, and is just as epic as far as scope.

Totally different genre but similar in quality and intensity:

Sidney Lumet's Prince of the City
