Who is it that Patton replaces as Corps Commander?

You hear Bradley {Malden} say 'There goes ...' and then you see him get into a Jeep. What became of him?

Major General Lloyd Fredendall.

A strange scene, as we only see this general we never see up close watched by Patton as he walks into his jeep, snaps off a salute to a soldier, and is driven away. The fact that he left II Corps a shambles is mentioned, but not attributed directly to him in the film, making the scene seem pretty superfluous. I wonder if they filmed something more involved dealing with Fredendall's removal, then cut it down to a quick shot in order to cover for a cut in the conversation Patton is having with Bradley and the other officers.

Apparently Patton had a meeting with Fredendall when he came to take charge, but we don't see that.

It's corps, not core; a corps is made up of several divisions.

How about when Obama pronounced corpsman as corpseman 3 times in one speech!!

reply

That was truly stunning - but, he gets away with that sort of thing, whereas anyone else would be skewered by the media.

Just in laughter. Just as Trump is doing today on Barack Hussein going off on the Iran treaty cancellation. LOL

Bradley says there goes Major General Lloyd Fredendall but I see Gen. Lucien Truscott gettin into the jeep.

reply

No. We don't see Truscott (John Doucette) until much later in the film.

reply

It sure looks like John Ducette gettin into the jeep.

Fredendall was one of the most incompetent Generals in the history of the U.S. Army. He was even labeled a coward, as he refused to spend time up at the front, and he built himself a ridiculous fortress waaaaay behind the front so that he could sleep at night. He had an engineer battalion work day and night for weeks wasting explosives to blast out a cave inside a mountain, just so he'd be safe. It was this goofy fortress of his that was one of the reasons he was sacked. To spare the Army the ignominy of a disgraced General, he was sent home to a hero's welcome, and put in charge of a training command, where he presumably wouldn't get any more soldiers needlessly killed.

But in fairness to Fredendall, even if Patton had been in charge at Kasserine, the Germans probably still would have won. The American troops were green and this was their first real taste of battle, which is the critical issue, regardless of who is in charge. Kasserine could have been a real disaster for the U.S., if the convoluted command structure on the German hadn't done them in. Had Rommel been in complete control it might have been very interesting. And Patton would have really gotten his showdown with Rommel...
