George C Scott was a rarity. Conservative Icon who was an atheist
I want to admit to you before hand I am not a Republican nor an atheist. But I did love George C Scott's movies. I thought he was one of our greatest actors.
What I find about him personally is that he was an enigma. He appeared to be somewhat conservative in his views, and yet he was an atheist. Today that does not seem to work. It is sort of like me, I believe in God ( although I admit fully I am a sinner ) but I do not vote Republican and I do not like a lot of what mainstream christendom does. For instance, how can you condemn gays when it seems obvious that they are born that way ? Hating a gay man just because he is gay makes as much sense as hating a black man because he is black or a white man because he is white. It goes against Jesus' greatest command " Do unto others as we would wish done unto us "
Patton seems to be conflicted as well. He believes in God, prays and reads the bible ( "every god damn day" ) yet cusses like a sailor and loves war ( which is mass murder ). Maybe these contradictions ( played so masterfully by George C Scott ) was one of the things that attracted the actor to the character. Because Patton was seen as a right wing icon many people on the right love George C Scott because of the movie. But I wonder how many would actually like him personally knowing he was an atheist ? Conservatives and the Christian Right seem to go hand in hand.
