'Social suicide' the main theme of MASH
I view the characters in MASH as having committed a kind of "social suicide" as a way of coping with the futility of the situation they're in. They abandon themselves to their crudest instincts, which shows through in their licentious behaviour and the radically politically incorrect nature of their humour.
The awkwardness is palpable in the few moments when they're reminded they have real lives back home in the USA.
