First Hollywood movie I've seen where drug use affects the whole film

I like this movie a lot, but I've never seen a decent budgeted movie where the lead actors are so off their rockers, that it obviously affects the film. Altman would have been better off just putting some rampant drug use into the script rather than leaving the performances the way they are. The movie looks very aged now because of it.

The only other performance I can think of where it's apparent that the star is obviously blitzed is "Home for the Holidays" with Robert Downey Jr (and Holly Hunter). But that was just one actor, this was the entire cast.

I wonder what Donald Sutherland thinks of it now? It also must have destroyed any chance of him disciplining Kiefer on any substance abuse problems. "Got problems with my pot usage in grade 8 Dad? Well, let's just pop in MASH to see how you were doing".

... and he said he smelled marijuana on the set but he had no idea what the smell was.

He also tried to get Altman fired.
