What is Tom holding up when he says, 'Doctor, you forgot your shingle?'

This puzzles me.

It is during a celebration for Trapper, I believe, and he says that line and holds up this massive white gooey thing that resembles oatmeal, but I don't think it is.

Is it what shingles looks like or something? Never got this.

It's creamed chipped beef on toast, which was commonly served in military chow lines and was popularly known by GIs as "*beep* (excrement) on a shingle" or "SOS".

Without SOS on a regular basis I would have starved to death before my tour was over.

Thanks guys.

Never got it. Thought that somebody had shingles, they operated, and well, just saying...

reply

Yes as others have mentioned it was the food known as SOS.

And the joke was: since they were celebrating Trapper being named head surgeon of the unit, Duke was saying "you forgot your shingle", because when you start your own business in the real world, and most commonly for doctors and lawyers, it is known as "hanging out your shingle".

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

My mom used to make SOS for us. It was quite good. Hers was, anyway.

That whole shingle thing was also a really bad pun, 'cuz when certain professional types comple their college courses, get their diplomas, and start their careers they get to hang up their "shingles".
