What a mess!!! It seemed everyone was talking at once at times. Very distracting.

That's Robert Altman's trademark. He's always having overlapping conversations in his films.

OK thanks..I did watch the dvd extras and that was mentioned. Should have watched that first before watching the movie.

Yes...ironically, a lot like the real world. :-)

That's probably the one thing that made the film work was the overlapping dialog especially in the operating room.
