how do think the story would continue after the ending?

How would Oliver go on? Would he remarry? How would he remember Jenny?
How would his relationship with his father be now?

It did continue. The movie sequel is called "Oliver's Story".

Check out OLIVER's STORY circa 1978.

It was just on SHOWTIME this week and I saw it.

Well, since you've not seen it, I wont comment completely, but you can rent the follow up movie and see for yourself.
(Hope you wont be too disappointed).
