One reason I had trouble liking this
they're both insufferable d***s...The fact that neither McGraw nor O'Neal can act doesn't help things, either

shareYES. Just watched it again. The characters are unlikable. Early 70s is a beloved era of film making, but this one has not matured well, unlike, say, Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia, or The Seven-Ups, which kinda stinx, but is excellent at the same time. Plus, the Love Story theme music reminds me of every kid who was taking piano lessons back in elementary school.
shareI never cared much for it either. I think the way they spoke to each other did it for me. Believe me I don't mind cursing in movies but it kinda kills it in a love story. Wuthering Heights and The Notebook are love stories.
shareWell count me in too.
Poor acting for sure.
I did not see this when it 1st came out.
Just heard stories about, how it was such a "sad love story".
Then I finally saw it,years later, & parts of this movie were just "cringe worthy".
True, the 2 main actors were good looking, but their acting was forced (it was like they were reading a script right in front of them). The ending was rushed.....Like: she got Leukemia, went to bed (in PERFECT make-up), and died!
I also just saw the movie follow-up this week, called OLIVER's STORY (1978), and THAT movie was just as poorly acted, and ONCE AGAIN, rushed at the end!

When we saw it we had just gotten married. The Theater WAS Packed AND Everyone cried so hard.
Fast forward 10 years and 20 and it seemed so h okey. Then I watched it again in 2015 and I have a 66 years old perspective. At the time in 1970 no movie had been made in modern times like this. It just shot to the best seller lists.
and the movie did have cute actors. I can see now in hindsight why it was popular. Now I no longer hate the hokiness.
heck I can't stand the Twilight movies cuz they are so hokey NOW. In ten years Bella and Edward will be "cringe worthy" too.
Girls who were innocently naively were in love and wanted their boyfriends to mourn them.
the Twilight movies are identical in theme. In love with the person your family dislikes.
I had no problem with their relationship. But Oliver hostility toward his father was way over the top. Oliver was a hothead and terribly spoiled and he married Jenny out of rebellion. She knew it too.
and what up with only needing 5,000? Was cancer treatment that cheap? Wh a t about insurance? To me that is what dates it.
