Marley over Milland?

I've seen this movie about three times now, and every time I think the same thing: why was John Marley nominated for the Golden Globe and Oscar over Ray Milland? Milland has more screen time and arguably more to do. While Marley did a good job with his limited screen time, IMO Milland did even more by making the audience see the love the character had for his son that the son couldn't. Part of this probably does stem from his look -- the man's big blue eyes often look like they're about to start tearing up -- but he took a role that could've been very flat and stereotypical and imbued it with deeper feeling and complexity. I think he should've been nominated instead. I just showed the movie to my wife, who had never seen it, and she agreed.

Anyone else agree, or have a particular reason they disagree?

Yeah, I agree with you. Marley was good, but Milland was great.

I also agree. Marley was good, but Milland was better.
