Couldnt he have sold the fancy car?

Instead of running to pa pa.

It wasn't worth that much at the time, and it would have been hard to find a buyer for it in the middle of winter.

That scene looked like it was intended to reinforce the difficult relationship he had with his father. He couldn't go to his own father's 60th birthday celebration, but he would come begging for money. Then the father satisfies his need to look down on his own son by assuming he had gotten a girl in "trouble".
I don't remember what the money was for, but it meant so much to Oliver that he was willing to go through a tough interpersonal experience to get it.

To me it seemed as if he didn't look down on him so much as he understood him and almost felt closer to him in a way. Throwing money at a problem like that was normal for him. The money was for Jenny's treatment.

I thought they should have sold the car when they were struggling to get by, living on her income alone.
