How come...

...when they blow the bank doors open, the gold is just laying on the floor? Why wasn't it secured inside the vault?

Interesting question, and one that I had not considered in the 30+ times I have viewed the film.

The most reasonable explanation is that the gold was stolen by the Nazis in conquered territory, and they are desperately trying to drag it home (borne out by Col. Dumkopf's explanation). The bank is in a captured French town, so 1)the vault may have previously been blown up when they originally conquered the town, or 2)the Nazis don't have access to the vault keys or combination, so they are relying on their 'Tiger' tanks to protect the gold.

Once again: interesting observation/question.

Yeah good question- if it isn't locked up (except behind some wooden doors that an axe could chop through) then why keep it in the lobby of a bank!? Why not a less obvious building to keep something that valuable. But it did make for good theatrics as they all gathered around to see the box broken open and the gleam in their eyes when they saw the gold.

How come they talk the German tank commander into blowing the front door open then 4 guys run into the back from a side door? They didn't need the Germans after all. Lol

reply

I reckon I can answer that.
It would be much quicker and easier to load up the gold, from the front doors. And they were running out of time.

Except that if there was a side door that they could get into they wouldn't have asked for help. The side door would've been good enough to get all the gold out.

reply

They couldn't have gotten the gold out, under any circumstances, unless the Nazi troops were destroyed or neutralized. The only real way to get away with ANY of it was to cut the Tiger crew in on the job.
