Who was the guy who came out of the other room when Corey was trying to sell the merchandise the first time? He said something about it being a favor.
shareI believe the guy from the other room was the same mobster who Corey took the money from, and instead of killing him, he let the police do the job. He knew it was Corey, because the prison guard who told Corey where he could pull the heist squeeled in an earlier scene.

shareThe guy who came out of the closet was indeed the mobster that Delon visited just after his release. He already lost 3 guys to Delon and Volonte (Vogel). The prison guard who hatched the heist informed on him.
Yet, it seems that this story line wasn't developed. After threatening there that Delon "won't have enough time to remember" the mobster is never heard from again. The possibility that his "plan" was for Delon et al to get caught while looking for another fence --is a little too subtle for a gangster film...
On the other hand, Corey said earlier that only one fence could move the merchandise, so the gangster presumably knew that as well. (And it's also possible that the prison guard originally insisted on using that fence and could therefore have spilled that part to the gangster as well.) The gangster's intention was probably to sabotage Corey's only viable means of unloading the hot jewels and thereby force him into error.
