WOO -- WHY?

What is this bull*beep* about John Woo remaking this, this amazing masterpiece.
John Woo Should go back to Hong Kong. He remade "The Samurai" as "The Killer", and it was decent,
but a remake of this is too much, since "The Killer" was his last good movie.
If he remakes this it will boiled down to stylistic action squences, which this is not about,
so he should just make his own damn story.

Le Samurai, Bob Le Flambeur, Le Doulos, Le Cercle Rouge, Un Flic, and Les Enfants Terribles are
all amazing.

I think it's pretty safe to assume that Woo never really arrived in the U.S.....he was captured and replaced with a robot CONTAINING MICHAEL BAY'S BRAIN! ARGH!

But yeah, I'll have to agree with ya, I love this movie and would prefer that it not be tarnished.

After seeing the Criterion version of this film and watching some of the extras, I think it would be impossible to remake this film. By Melville's own admission, the story was nothing special or new, and it is evident that he highly stylized this story with long silences and dark rainy and cold environments. Woo would be crazy imo to try and remake this film unless he highly stylized it the way Hollywood movies have rarely done. There also may be some confusion about Woo releasing this through Realto company for a Chinese and asian market. So it could be a misunderstanding that he is releasing Melville's film not a new version that he will produce or direct.

Don´t be afraid. :)
If Woo will do a remake it will be totally different film. And the original masterpiece will be a masterpiece forever. This film will never touched.

I don't recall The Killer being a remake. Le Samourai was simply inspiration. Kind of like what Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel and John Woo's work was to Tarantino.

le samouraï hasnt much to do with the killer, its just the base for woo's emotional and action stuff...which I love to see, if its done good again, of his hollywood work I only liked face/off.
Le circle rouge will not be touched in a way that does do damgage to it. I dont think Woo has balls like that.

Did you know that Melville is like a god to Woo, knowing that don’t you think that Woo will respect Melville work and give all his effort in making this remake a good one just like he did with the killer. I hate when people bash Woo's work.

woo's had a hard turn in hollywood. He's done some of the best films i've ever seen and is argueable the best action scene directer ever. The killer, hard boiled, bullet in the head, better tomorrow movies were all wonderful. Woo has had a lot of pressure from studios to bring what he can to a pg-13 make as much money as you can system. Broken arrow and Face off were great. Hard target sucked cause van damn wouldn't even listen to the directer and cause he's van damme. some of his later films have also been weak...but remember that he used to write his own stories as well as direct them. now he's handed what to do and it's not his vision he's bringing to life but a studios. Woo loved the work melville did and i totally think that since it was an inspiration to him he will do awesome with it.

On the back of the Criterion Box, right below where it lists the features, it says: John Woo presents a film by Jean -Pierre Melville and then below that are the actors and the rest of the normal credits.

I just received this DVD from Criterion and it has a release date of 2003.

I am very confused.

I noticed that too, could Woo have bought the rights or been instrumental in the restoration of the movie perhaps?
