Ever get the feeling that a young Michael Mann was inspired by this film?
The first time I finished the incredible Le Samurai, I immediately thought of Michael Mann's films (one of my favorite directors of all time). The intoxicating atmosphere, heavily restrained performances and ear for music (as well as silence obviously) all reminded me of Mann's super-cool crime films.
After watching Bob le Flambuer, Army of Shadows and now Le Cercle Rouge, I am convinced Mann respected and took a lot from Melville. The characters are all fated to end up dead or alone in both directors' work as well as the uncanny ability to create a detached, yet intoxicating atmosphere. I respect both these guys immensely for crafting such unique works.
Also, if you haven't watched Army of Shadows watch it immediately. Its honestly one of the best movies I have ever seen. Hell, all the ones listed are masterpieces, but Army of Shadows is the particular standout to me.

Le Cercle Rouge, a two-sided procedural as it is, may well have been influenced by Frederick Forsythe´s book The Day Of The Jackal (made into a film 3 years after Melville´s picture came out).
