Bloom Set For Cercle Rouge Re-make?

Orlando Bloom may walk in the footsteps of the great Alain Delon in a remake of Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Cercle Rouge. The remake by Hong Kong director Johnnie To will, unsurprisingly, be titled Red Circle. Bloom has been offered the role, but no contract has been signed.

The plot of the film is rather convoluted, but, in essence, it brings together Corey (Bloom), a refined thief; an alcoholic ex-cop; and an escaped murderer to plan a risky jewel heist.

Chow Yun Fat and Liam Neeson are also in negotiations to star, with the $40 million film planned to start shooting in June.

Yet another classic has been given the remake assualt. But why on earth choose Orlando 'Bland' for the Alain Delon role? Of all the people on this earth they pick this stiff putz to immulate the legendery Delon.

as much as i love Le Cercle Rouge, Johnny To is an EXCELLENT director (watch election 1 and 2, throw down, exiled, the mission-these are very much in the tradition of jean pierre melville movies!). He would do a great job!

I agree, he's a good director and Election was good. However when the film comes out some people (myself included) will no doubt compare him and his film to the original, and it will be there that he'll become a victim of criticism. But I'm still enraged by Orlando 'Bland' playing the Alain Delon part. I think 'Bland' is a putz who can't act to save his life, even though he's been in some good movies. However if they really need to remake this, get someone decent like Matt Damon or Johnny Depp.

(I wanted to say Daniel Craig, but I much prefer him doing a Bond film than this)

Indeed, Orlando Bloom is bad news. But I doubt it that even a decent choice could pull it off. You don't need one great replacement - you actually need five equally powerful actors to get this thing going.

(And much as I like Matt Damon: in The Talented Mr Ripley he didn't really ever manage to make forget Delon in Plein Soleil.)

Very true. Not wishing to be over the top but Delon is an icon (as well as an excellent actor) I mean look at his performance as Jeff Costello in Le Samurai, absolutely masterful. His cool, enigmatic and calculated performance made him, in my eyes, the best hitman to ever grace the screen.

In regards to Plein Soleil, can't really compare, since both him and Damon are flawless.

Glad this never went past the imagination stage. May they leave this great movie alone as it is.
