Altman tribute on TCM this 12/9

Turner Classic Movies has scheduled a brief tribute to Robert Altman, which will include a showing of the letterboxed version of BREWSTER MCCLOUD, this December 9th at 3:30 am (program those TiVo's!).

Will it really be letterboxed though? There is an old TCM broadcast of this movie posted on Youtube.com in 10 minute installments (you can see the TCM logo on the screen), but only the opening credits are letterboxed...everything else is fullscreen. Dammit!!

Maybe that was an old broadcast and they've been able to find a complete letterboxed copy, I sure hope so.

They've been showing it in 2.35:1 letterbox for the past couple of years.

YEY!

It's about to start

And yes the TV listings say it's supposed to be letterboxed =D

Its letterboxed and I'm taping it on DVR!

So far its hilarious, and so different from almost everything else I've seen by Altman.

This was really different from Altman's other work. I can't say any of his other films are like this, although I have yet to see Images and 3 Women, but those films are more serious than Brewster McCloud. From what I've read they do have some pretty off-the-wall surreal happenings but the tone is much less playful in those two films. OC and Stiggs might share some similarities, but I haven't gotten up the courage to see it yet (its supposedly one of his worst films).

I got the feeling Altman didn't take the screenplay very seriously and basically just "winged" it (no pun intended), throwing in as much wild and random stuff as he and his cast could come up with. Its a goof of a film, but a fun one...and definitely cultish as hell.

I'd say this is a one-of-a-kind movie for Altman.

Anybody reading this... did you record the broadcast on DVD? I would love to have this film in widescreen format... I so need a DVD recorder!

E-mail me at: [email protected] if you're cool with setting me up with this!

I wonder if they will ever play this again.
