Universal-Please release AIRPORT in bluray!

I saw AIRPORT at the Radio City Music Hall in 1970. The TODD-AO picture was spectacular! Only a 70mm TODD-AO bluray transfer will do this film justice.

Bluray? Are you kidding? Universal has only just recently discovered the DVD era.

You may know there's lots of trivia about Airport's engagement at RCMH. The theater (and its chief projectionist) had steadfastly refused to install 70mm projectors prior to "Airport," supposedly wanting to avoid a disruption. I seem to recall the last argument had been over "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" in 1964. Universal, however, was four-walling "Airport," and Ross Hunter insisted on the 70mm projection, so RCMH gave in and installed them.

The ad for "Airport" at RCMH and the Easter show that accompanied it can be found at the wonderful cinematreasures.org.

I envy you getting to see this at RCMH.

Oh Universal, you've done it again!

The box cover for the Blu Ray relese depicts the plane during a violent......wait for it......rain storm! (insert gasp here)

Rain storm??? The movie takes place during a blizzard!! It's precipitation, but the wrong kind! Even worse, the image shows the plane being hit by lightening!!

Who approves this stuff?

Unbelieveable, the studio that produced the movie and is releasing the title into the home video market doesn't even know what the movies' about!!!!

Oh Universal, you silly silly fools.

How about their video cover that appears to depict a plane on fire? At least they haven't come up with one depicting a plane turned upside down in the ocean.

I just bought this classic film on Blue Ray last night. I don't have a Blue-
Ray player yet, but plan on getting one for Christmas. I have been stocking up
on Blue Ray DVDs in anticipation.

Has anyone seen it on Blue Ray and can comment on the picture and sound quality?

reply

Both picture and sound quality are excellent. The Towering Inferno and The Poseidon Adventure also are very good on Blu-Ray.

T.E. Lawrence: The trick, William Potter, is not minding that it hurts.

Hello,

Given that this is a Todd-AO picture, the overall quality of the Blu-Ray is just fair, not excellent, in my opinion.

If you want to know what is truly "excellent", at least from where I stand, give a chance to the latest BD-V edition of Lawrence of Arabia, or Baraka, both scanned at 8K resolution.

I do want to check out (and, of course, buy) Lawrence Of Arabia. I got to see it last October on the big screen. Awesome experience.
