George Kennedy

I'm just curious why his character was the only one to return in the Airport series. Joe Patroni was an important character and one of the heroes of the first Airport. I like the character, but I'm just curious why no one else returned for any of the other movies.

Who else? Dean Martin's salary was too high and Lancaster hated the film.

Probably because Patroni was a popular character in the original film, and George Kennedy was willing to reprise the role.

Patroni became more ridiculous with each film. Rising from line mechanic, to a vice president, and finally a Concorde captain, despite there being no indication he was a pilot in the previous films.

George Kennedy was a serious miscast for Patroni - just my opinion

Initially Universal wanted Burt Lancaster to feature in AIRPORT 1975 - but Lancaster was not a fan of the disaster movie genre so passed before there was even a script prepared.
