Remake with Matthew Perry?

This will never work.

I thought Felix, maybe. But he was casted as Oscar. Holy Crap! It is hard to match the chemistry of Randall and Klugman.

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury signifying nothing.

reply

Too bad David Hyde Pierce who played Dr. Niles Crane on 'Frasier' wasn't younger, his uptight portrayal of Niles was Felix all over.

reply

I always wanted Niles and Felix to meet and have an operatic spat

reply

The show already takes a lot from Frasier - Oscar being a call-in radio show host, his apartment looking like Frasier's with its huge elevated balcony, even the showrunner worked on Frasier - so Pierce would have been the straw that broke the camel's back. As it is, this camel already needs to be put out of its misery.

It will be airing this fall. Never say never but since the only real successful remake of TV show is Hawaii Five-0 it doesn't look good but I'll probably check it out anyways.

reply

Twilight Zone, Dragnet, Mike Hammer to name a few that were successful. Not hugely, but moderately. Not to mention all the American remakes that got there start in Great Britian. For example, Three's Company, The Office, Sanford and Son and All in the Family.

And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

I like Perry a lot but as Oscar ?!
He should have definitely tried as Felix. In the Season 3 of Friends, he was very much like Tony Randall in looks and manners.

Anyway, I don't think a remake is appropriate. The original series was never a financial hit but critically, it's been a cult.
Plus, I don't know how many shows have reprised the 'uncanny roomates" plot idea: it won't sound too fresh to today viewers.
Joey and Chandler in Friends showed that kind of spirit. So did Stuart and Carter in Spin City. And that was twenty years ago.

I've always thought that Steve Carrell would be a potentially brilliant Felix (although I know he won't be doing another series any time soon-but a Broadway revival...?_. Oscar's tougher though. Matthau and Klugman are hard acts to follow. I have a feeling that if this actually happens Perry will play Oscar more low key and realistic which would take a lot of the fun out of the character.

reply

If you absolutely HAD to remake this classic (and I wouldn't), Jim Parsons would probably work as Felix. Only Oscar that pops into my mind right now would be John C. Reilly. Problem is, I couldn't see them having any chemistry together.

reply

What is it with you people and remakes? Leave the shows alone; they're classics. Who gives a damn about Jim Parsons or Matthew Perry or any other inferior actors? There are people here who want to remake the Rockford Files and Columbo. Why? Have you seen the Honeymooners remake? Why not come up with some new ideas for a change? Anyone who wants to replace Randall or Klugmann or Garner or Falk is out of their minds. Have you seen the Psycho remake? Case closed.

reply

The show is set to premiere on February 19, 2015 following "The Big Bang Theory" and the series finale of "Two and a Half Men", whose position it will take for the remainder of the television season.

reply

I'll watch the premiere, but have very low expectations for it. My prediction is that it will be extremely lightweight and mostly unfunny fluff that will be cancelled fairly quickly, much like The Michael J. Fox Show and Selfie, both of which I also gave up on after their premieres. With all due respect to Matthew Perry - since this is his vanity project - nobody, but nobody can ever match Tony Randall and Jack Klugman and it's sheer folly to even try. It would be like trying to paint your own Mona Lisa and thinking it could be even 1% as good as Leonardo's.

I watched this last night, it was as unfunny as everyone predicted. I can't see it hanging around for very long. The canned laughter was so loud and over the top. They changed the names of the wives for some reason to Gabby and Ashley, ugh. The girls playing the Pigeon sisters were much better actors than the guys playing Felix and Oscar, I actually had a couple of chuckles during their big scene. I was also sad to see how low Dave Foley has fallen, playing "Roy", he looked awful and had maybe a total of 3 lines of dialogue.

What a DISASTER huh??

I'm sure that Jack Klugman & Tony Randall are rolling in their graves!!

Watched it. No more for me. Just awful. Perry misses the mark as Oscar, but Lennon is just so incredibly far off as Felix, he's not even on the same planet. Tony Randall injected Felix with a force of will and charisma. You might find him annoying at times, but there was no ignoring him and he was likable in his own way. You'd be willing to put up with him and have him as a friend, at least up to a point. Lennon's Felix is just milquetoast and forgettable.

reply

Thanks, all, for the comments. I had decided to eschew the show entirely, but felt a tiny whisp of guilt that maybe it would actually turn out to be good and I'd be missing something. Now you have put my mind at ease. Thank you.

it sucks

reply

no interest at all. Sounds like this will be as much as a success as the black Odd Couple with Ron Glass and the other guy from Sanford and Son

reply

I watched the first two episodes and it blows worse than "Friends" last few seasons.
