Question about ''The Flip-Side of Satan''

I recently watched this episode on Hulu Plus, because I hadn't seen it since I was a child (late 70's) and I really enjoyed it. But, I remember seeing a demonic face that kept showing up from time to time in that episode.

When I recently watched it on Hulu Plus, there was no demonic face that kept showing up. I realize that the episode was a repeat when I first watched it in the late 70's, but does anyone else remember the demonic face in that episode back then, or am I just having a false memory?

reply

This episode aired not too long ago on MeTV and it had the demonic face along with the bizarre music. If you didn't see it, chances are it was edited out which is a real shame since it makes the episode even more creepy.

reply

Thanks! There doesn't seem to be any edits in the episode, the face just isn't there anymore in parts of the episode where I remember it showing up. Perhaps the face was added, later, when the show went into syndication. Anyhow, here's a link to the episode on Vimeo, as I recently saw it.

That's exactly the case, the face was one of the things added to this episode to make it long enough for syndication. MeTV still runs the syndicated version of the show, while Hulu has the 'restored' original cut of the episode, which is also found on the DVD release.

Thanks for the reply. I'd love to see the syndicated version again. Unfortunately, I don't get MeTV in my area, and I can't find syndicated version anywhere online.

reply

JB, sorry you don't get MeTV but maybe in the future!

RC, thanks for the additional info!

Here's the thing about "NG": in its original run, "Night Gallery" was an hour-long show composed of three or four different segments. Two of them could be about 20 minutes long with two 10 minute bits added. When the show was sold into syndication, instead of keeping the hour format, the segments are aired separately as solo episodes. Because some of those segments didn't actually run 30 minutes, filler was added to them to pad them out. That explains why the "Flip Side of Satan" syndicated episode had the scary faces and the woman running down the road screaming "J.J.!" added to them but they were not in the original (Hulu) segment. Since "NG" was a Universal show, some of the padded segments used footage from Universal movies like "Frankenstein" in "The Housekeeper" and "The Birds" in "Big Surprise".

That might explain that bizarre little segment "Junior" with Wally Cox.

LOL! Hearing that inhuman voice coming from Junior scared me crapless when I was a kid...hehe

I finally have it! I now get MeTV on a channel I already have called MyZTV. MeTV programming starts at 2:30 a.m. with Night Gallery and ends after Emergency (5 to 6p.m.).

Along with the other classic shows, I'm looking forward to finally seeing the syndicated version of "The Flip Side of Satan", which I haven't seen since I was a kid.

I remember 'THE FLIP-SIDE...' quite well. In fact, I mightive written it, though can't be sure after all these years. But either way I know I worked on it, and liked it a lot. And strangely enough...I THINK I do remember a 'FACE'. However, there were so many weird things in that great series, it's hard to recall much of anything. But "FACE" or "NO-FACE", it was really the writing that made the series. The 'WORDS', my friend. The 'WORDS'. Thanks, gs

Those faces were some of the ones shown in the opening credits. One of them even appeared in an episode ("Keep in Touch--We'll Think of Something". He played a bartender).

I don't find a 'bartender' listed for "Keep in Touch - We'll Think of Something". Are you quite sure?

Which of the faces was it? In particular, I'm looking for the really ugly guy with the perm who was used in 'Flip Side.' 

I can understand adding the scary faces to fill out the segment, but what was with the woman being chased by the horse-drawn hearse? I'm guessing she's supposed to be the wife of the man who calls J.J., accusing him of sleeping with her. The woman who killed herself over him. If you look at that footage, it looks they tried to cut it before the hearse is shown. It's just that, given the segment's contemporary setting, seeing this old vehicle is really unusual since it doesn't deal with time travel or anything like that.

As the demonic voice on JJ's record would say:

HAIL GERALD SANFORD!

reply

Thank you -- I'll take the HAIL! But it's those long nights I had to stay up trying to make the stories work! But well worth those nights! And ever more worth to have all you "POSTERS" still talking about them. Thanks -- who'd a-thought?! gs

reply

What did you think of the painting Tom Wright did for The Flip-Side of Satan?

reply

Actually after all these years I don't really remember much. However, everything TOM WRIGHT painted was TERRIFIC! Without him -- 'NIGHT GALLERY' -- would just have been
'SUN-DOWN GALLERY'. gs

reply

'After-Hours Gallery' just doesn't have the same ring to it.

reply

What about "Dusk Gallery" or (dare I say it) "Twilight Gallery"?

"Night Gallery" is the perfect name for this iconic series. God bless Rod Serling and all the wonderful writers for bringing it to haunt our nightmares!

And thank you for the 'HAIL GERALD SANFORD! (OH, BY THE WAY. gerald sanford -- That's my name. gs

If I remember correctly, those scenes were from an episode of The Sixth Sense. It was probably added in this episode because the content could be related to the DJ story.

reply

That footage was borrowed from an episode of The Sixth Sense (1972) (the Second Season opener, Coffin, Coffin in the Sky (1972)). Their use of it in 'Flip Side' is extrapolated from JJ Wilson's phone conversation about the woman (a producer's wife) with whom he'd apparently had an affair, and who had subsequently killed herself.
