That blonde newsroom extra

In most episodes we see this guy in the background, behind Mary and Murray in the newsroom. There are usually two or three other extras, but this guy always stands out because he has a big shock of blonde hair, and this is unusual because extras are usually chosen to be inconspicuous.

So I've always wondered about him. Who was he? Was he used so frequently because he had some other connection to the show? Did he accumulate other credits?

His name is J Benjamin Chulay. He played "Pete" on the MTM show. He was given a few lines in the middle seasons. He gets a credit for those episodes.

He's also the son of John C. Chulay, who was the assistant director on almost every episode of MTM. John C. Chulay also directed 4 episodes of MTM as well as 3 episodes of Bob Newhart.
