Opal Is Opal Cortlandt again?!

Maybe the new writers aren't aware, but in the original series, after Opal's divorce from Palmer, she dropped the Cortlandt name. She referred to herself as "Opal" (no last name) like Madonna, Cher, Rhianna. Now she's back to "Opal Cortlandt."

I think she has always had the last name Cortland but just never used it to introduce herself.

No, they made a big point of mentioning that she dropped the Cortlandt name and was "just Opal." In the end credits for the last several years, her character was credited as "Opal," not "Opal Cortlandt".

That maybe true but I am OK with her being Opal Courtlandt. Maybe she reintroduced herself with the last name after Palmer's death.

But legally she has to have a last name is what I mean. She has always been Opal Cortland.

Even those singers you mentioned have real names ending in a surname so one can't legally sever an identifiable factor of that magnitude. In all likelihood, Opal over time grew to respect Palmer after his death, reflecting on all the tender memories she had with him (while not forgetting the select undue harm perpetuated by his ruthless persona), that she felt it best to honor that memory by referencing her married name.

When God made Tom Cruise, he was only joking.

When we last saw Opal in 2011 she was engaged to her old boy friend, the one that Verla Grubbs had been trying to seduce. So what happened to him? Apparently that marriage never went through!

Sam Brady. I forgot about that. I guess it didn't work out.

The Opal character was originally Opal Gardner, ex-wife of Ray Gardner and mother of Tad Gardner (before he was adopted by the Martins) and Jenny Gardner. This was waaaay back there when Opal was played by Dorothy Lyman, who left AMC to star in "Mama's Family".
