I assume Ryan was going to help them in the final firefight...

When the posse lead by Robert Ryan is furiously riding to get to the final firefight, I assume he was trying to get there in time to help TWB...Thanks in advance.

What with his band of two bit redneck peckerwoods, do you really think so?

But Thornton (Ryan) doesn't know there's a firefight going on. He's simply trying to catch the Bunch before his deadline runs out, otherwise it's back to the slammer.

Actually, he does - he can see it going on through his spyglass. I suspect he knows there's only going to be one ending to this, so he wants to make sure his men can pick up the bodies before anyone else does - notice that he doesn't actually arrive until it's all over, so there's never any likelihood of him joining in.
