As far as I remember the reason he led the posse was because he didn't want to go to prison, but once across the border he could have deserted the posse and stayed in Mexico, which he did in the end anyway. Why such loyalty to the rail road?
Pike hints at the reason when he says that Thornton had given his word to the railroad company - he understands and respects that. Also, at the end, Thornton says that he only promised to 'send them back', which he did, so he's carried out his side of the bargain. It seems as if they're operating on a kind of code where their word is their bond.
