Original cut - How long was it and what was cut for R rating

From what i read during my research of Peckinpah films, original rough cut of Wild Bunch was either 4 hours,190 minutes,185 minutes or 151 minutes long.

I heard that it was originally rated X and that MPAA demanded heavy cuts to be made. But i also heard that due to the bad reactions of preview audience on violence in the movie,or by decision made by Peckinpah himself, violence was already cut short before the movie was submitted to MPAA.

While i don't know much about what plot/character/dialogue scenes were deleted, i did read that there was a scene included in earlier cuts where Don Jose admits to the bunch that he ran like a coward when Mapache and his soldiers came to his village. Also theatrical trailer shows one scene that's not in the movie where Sykes tells Dutch that they have to get Angel back and Dutch asks how.

As for violence,i read that opening shootout was longer with more town people getting shot in crossfire and that some death scenes were originally gorier and actually shown onscreen. Example; Crazy Lee shooting bank hostages and then gets shot and killed in slow motion...

I read somewhere that final shootout was never cut,but that Angel's death scene originally had more blood coming from his neck after Mapache cuts him.

I know that death scene of three bounty hunters was filmed and shown onscreen with them getting shot in slow-mo. But this was not deleted because of the violence but because someone suggested to Peckinpah that he should cut that scene out. Which personally i think, works a lot better cause final action scene should include the bunch, and not those who were hunting them.

So,that was all that i know about original cut of The Wild Bunch. If anyone knows more about MPAA cuts and what scenes were cut because of the violence,or just how long was original version, let me know.

Btw,great western movie and probaly my favorite one.

10/10

There is suppose to be a gutting scene that was cut. But I don't know who gutted who.

Doubtful the original cut would have been north of 3 hours. How many additional scenes/sequences could there be? Keep in mind this was an expensive movie being backed by a major studio, and Warner Bros. wouldn't have allowed a (relatively) inexperienced director to go off and and start shooting with a heavily-bloated screenplay (scripts average about a page a minute) or -- even worse -- with a mostly unfinished screenplay.

Not that Peckinpah didn't improvise a bit anyway. I know he did. But let's get real. He was shouldering a massive budget with just a few (failed or at-best moderately successful) features under his belt. Translation: Warners would've kept him on a tight leash and demanded he turn in a movie that fell within a certain running time.

No way would Peckinpah believe he could get away with turning in a 3 hour movie.

It was 190 minutes, and the only cuts I heard about were a gutting scene and that the opening shootout was initially 21 minutes long and MUCH bloodier
